Father-Daughter relationships in magical girls series were very important, but seem to have died out in the recent years. The bond between Mako, and her father in Mahou no Mako-chan was a very beautiful thing. Out of all of Toei’s series, this one may have focused the best on a father and daughter bond. Although she had a mother, a foster father, a mentor, and sisters, she always remained closest to her birth father.
Mako’s father is the essence of the general father. He’s always protective, sometimes irrational, a bit of a hothead, but a big softie on the inside. He constantly screams and yells at Mako for visiting the surface, but finally accepts her leaving the sea to live as a human. Even after she leaves, he visits her on land, disguised as a businessman. He watches over her, and is more than a little concerned about what she’s up to. He’s unable to let go of his daughter, something that makes me very different from his wife.
Near the end of the series, God is angry with Mako living on land, and demands her to return to the sea. Unable to take away her happiness, her father accepts God’s punishment instead. Mako prepares to sacrifice herself to save her father. Their strong love for each other convinces God to forgive them. At the end of the series, Mako’s father finally accepts his daughter becoming a true human. He rescues Mako, and her beloved Akira one last time.
“She has finally become human. Mako no longer sees you”.
Unfortunately I don’t know anywhere to find episodes at the moment. However, the series is being released on DVD in Japan!
